Part 3 of the IELTS Speaking Test

Part 3 of the IELTS speaking section is often referred to as the "Discussion" or "Two-way Discussion" part. This section is a more in-depth and extended conversation with the examiner. This part focuses on complex topics related to society, culture, and global issues. We will look into more information and some sample questions.

Part 3 Format:

•  Discussion (4-5 minutes): Part 3 is an in-depth discussion with the examiner. It consists of a series of questions related to the general topic introduced in part 2 (the Cue Card). The questions in part 3 of the test are designed to give your student the opportunity to talk about more abstract issues and ideas. It is a two-way discussion with the examiner and assesses your student’s ability to express and support ideas effectively.

These questions in part 3 are more complex and require you to express your opinions, provide reasons, and engage in deeper discussion with the examiner. This is unlike part 1, which was easy.

Sample Question :

The question in part 3 of the test will be connected to Part 2. Part 2 focused on discussing someone who has inspired you in your life. Therefore, the question for this part will be:

Can you think of any other individuals who have significantly impacted your life and how they have inspired you?

This question was taken from a YouTube video of an IELTS mock test. The link of the video can be found below.

To sum it up, part 3 of the IELTS speaking section is like a deeper conversation with the examiner. It covers complex topics related to society, culture, and global issues. The questions follow the topic you discussed in part 2. This part is harder than the previous ones.
