Prepare Your Students for IELTS
Introduction
If you teach English as a second language, you may have students who need to take high-stakes tests like IELTS. This test measures their proficiency in academic English and is often required for admission to universities or immigration purposes. So how do you prepare your students for this challenging exam?
We start by explaining what is IELTS?
It's The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), It is highly regarded as the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration. The IELTS system has been the standard test for more than 30 years. It is trusted by more than 11,500 organizations in over 140 countries around the world. And more than half a million people take the exam annually. Whether students are looking to study, develop their careers, or settle in an English-speaking country, IELTS can pave the way.
There are two different IELTS test types: Academic test and General Training. Our blog's focus is on the Academic test. If students are planning to study in an English-speaking country and enroll in a higher education program and professional registration, the IELTS Academic test is likely the right choice for them. So it's in the student's best interest to take the exam.
How does IELTS work?
IELTS was formed by the world’s leading language assessment experts to test the full range of skills needed to study or work successfully in an English-speaking country. And it's graded on a scale of 1-9. So students will be assessed on:
• Listening – to see how well they recognize opinions, understand ideas, and follow the development of an argument.
• Reading – to see how well can they read for main ideas, general sense, and details, and whether they understand the writer’s inferences and opinions.
• Writing – to see how well and how accurately they write a response, organize their ideas, and use a full range of vocabulary and grammar.
• Speaking – to see how well they can communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences, and express and justify their opinions.

As a teacher, it never crossed my mind to take the exam. Thank you for this, what more important tips do you think I should relay to my students?
ReplyDeleteHi Reem, I would tell them to never memorize answers. And practice listening to various podcasts from Spotify. Read novels and articles. Practice speaking with natives online such as the app Cambly. Also, tell them to practice free online tests weekly to familiarize themselves with IELTS on this website here https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/take-ielts/prepare/free-ielts-practice-tests
